The Promise

• Written by

I want to take a time out for a minute
Flashback to the days, sweet, simple life –
Admit it, I was a scarred, restless, bewildered freshman
Penguin waddling down the halls –
Imperfection all over my face, hip and waist.
No one knew my name, it's a start to a new game.
Regret was my first impression when I first came.
But then I soon felt God moving, fanning my flame.
He brought in people who were different like me
From a foreign land, none white just like me.
We connected and clicked because we shared the same difference;
Appearance and background was of no significance.

It was only my second night here.
But I'll remembered that night 'til my death, crystal clear.
Front lobby pavement, I sat first on the ground
Two new friends on each side
We laughed, joked and cried.
Time went by and a Fourth one caught up, eager to share his life
I wanted him to shut up.
We walked to the pond and sat under a tree,
One of the girls said, “Hey let's pray for you and me.”

And we sat there, praying for one another
Praying in different languages.
Man, it was beautiful, sincere, profound and real.
I was moved. I was touched. I was blessed.

Yea, I sat there in silence
Thinking God is giving me my second chance.
And for the first time, I felt at peace and at home,
Knowing that this is where He wants me to belong.
The night sky was filled with stars
And the Fourth soon started to play his guitar.
We sang “As the Deer.”
Soothingly and literally, a doe strutted across the road momentarily.
Man, my mind was blown,
Despite the unknown,
God was there with us,
He looked after us,
Cuz he cares for us,
and so we made a promise just between the four of us.
And sadly enough, the promise never held through.
Well, except between just two.
And I can't thank the Lord enough for you.
I promise to always be there to get you through.
I love you.
