Crow Station (Interlude)

• Written by

my grandfather named every crow he could identify
by the chip in their call
a scratch in the middle of the caw
that distinguished one bird from the thirty in the tree
he said crows remember faces.
said if you wrong a crow
the whole murder knows your face
and passes it down, generation to generation
there are crows alive today
that have never seen you
that know what you did
he said the difference between a crow and a raven
is that the raven knows what it is
i been sitting with that distinction for years
between the thing
and the thing that knows what it is
the crow station in my chest
is where everything stops before it migrates
every version of myself
passes through it
on the way to becoming the next version
they all know each others faces.
they all carry the record of what the others did.
i am a murder of prior selves
moving together through the cold
