Lyrical Analysis of...
The Queer Frontier (Crispy2 and Day1 Diss)
- //Verse//
- Crispy ducked into a bookstore cause his rhyme pad was getting wet, and his favorite cafe was full
- He headed toward the back where the art and poetry sections were, it pulled
- Him in like a cell, Day1 was standing there, right in front of the poetry shelves
- When he pulled the rap sheet down, their eyes met over the top of the well
- And they ended up talking for 20 minutes, standing right there between the stacks
- Crispy learned that just like him, Day1 liked to rap and write diss tracks
- Eventually they realized they’d been standing in the same spot long enough for 3
- Other customers to squeeze past by them, Crispy said he's gonna get coffee
- And asked Day1 out on a date, so they walked 3 blocks to their local cafe
- Crispy ordered a vanilla bean creme frappe, and Day1 ordered an iced pumpkin spice latte
- They sat at a tiny table by the window with their knees occasionally brushing
- Neither pulled away, they had a conversation, and both were blushing
- At one point, Day1 reached across the table and touched the edge of Crispy's rhyme book
- He asked if he could see, Crispy hesitated cause his work was precious, but there was something in Day1's look
- That made him slide it over, Day1 paused on a rhyme that said
- "Time and time again, I keep having to hide from them, that I'm likin' men"
- Day1 looked into his eyes and told him how much he related, Crispy's heart was pumping elated
- //Chorus//
- Got a leaf on your head and you can’t get rid of it
- Wear a hat everywhere cause some people are ignorant
- Get wasted, fall over, your piece gets knocked off
- So you hide in the bathroom and drink where no one can see
- Underneath, and catch a glimpse of your beautiful covered leaf
- No one wants to spend their life living in fear, no going near
- Welcome to the queer frontier
- You wanna be seen for who you are, but the world’s a vicious place, handing ya scars
- They burned you down to smear, but you can rebuild your house of cheer
- All the blood, sweat, and tears, but homie, you’re still standing here
- Welcome to the queer frontier
- //Verse//
- When the cafe closed they walked outside, the streetlights were on
- Day1 told Crispy he was tired of pretending, Crispy said "then don't pretend" and he stopped the self con
- Their first kiss tasted like lavender, Crispy's hand came up to cradle Day1's jaw
- With tenderness, and when they pulled apart, they were both smiling and in awe
- Day1 rested his forehead against Crispy's, "I want to see the rest of your rhymes"
- "And I want to play you the song I wrote last month that didn’t have a name until tonight”
- Crispy said he wanted to hear it, then said he wanted to write about the way Day1 looks when he's talking about books
- They exchanged numbers, it was just the two of them under the thunder
- Experiencing the beautiful miracle of having found each other
- That night, Crispy opened his rhyme pad and wrote about Day1's smile
- That night, Day1 sat in his recording booth and made a song about Crispy's style
- He took a train ride with Day1 this weekend, and something hit him hard
- They were holding hands under their coats, heads resting against each other while they watched
- A movie, just two people in love, but every time someone walked by, they’d pull away, sit up straight
- Act like bein’ just friends was their brand, and Crispy felt like a criminal for holding his boyfriend's hand
- And if they were straight, no one would think twice, he’s still looking over his shoulder, still hoping no one’s comin’
- Still hiding the most natural thing in the world, loving someone
- By the time they reached their stop, Crispy had tears in his eyes
- Not from sadness, but from anger that we still live in a world where love has to be hidden with a disguise
