  1. [Verse 1: POV of Sadness]
  2. Aw, dear, we find ourselves at last
  3. At the bitter end, the empty climax
  4. Requiem for a life deprived of pleasure, purpose, or meaning
  5. May my eulogy for the still living breathe new meaning into an ill existence
  6. One man's tragedy can be another man's wisdom
  7. Let's get it
  8. At the start, there was nothin' but infinite bliss
  9. And then fate took a hit and said, "let there be [tristesse](sadness in french)"
  10. That's sadness, idiot
  11. You could call it an accident or an abysmal sin
  12. But all I know is that, in the end, you don't win
  13. "Yes, I do," said a few deluded humans
  14. Fools who abuse substances to fool themselves into amusement
  15. Givin' the blues new twists, gettin' ripped to this music
  16. Gettin' too loose in an attempt to keep it all together
  17. Hedonistic endeavors, a case of spiritual leisure
  18. You keep your treasure in a chest full of red herrings
  19. But you can feel the guilt and shame you're still bearing
  20. You think the pills you're wearing will prepare you for the perils
  21. The brain chemicals to make you forget that this world's terrible
  22. The Prozac to distract from all the panic attacks
  23. But that panic in fact was the pain of a greater sadness
  24. When you wake from your sleep, you will feel more bleak
  25. When the numbness wears off, you will feel more grief
  26. And then you'll come to know me, that there's no escapin' me
  27. No evadin' me, no erasin' me
  28. No eradicatin' or vaccinating against me
  29. No medication, meditation, or manifestation can break me
  30. Or break the pain I bring, or break the chains that hang
  31. Or break the rains that fall on all things
  32. I am that melancholy
  33. I am the first verse of a certain rapper's song
  34. That you'll hear after your laughter is gone
  35. And your aspirations wrong, and your bastards move on
  36. And your casket gets drawn, and you get laid to rest
  37. Yes, I am that chronic distress
  38. That undeniable, identifiable emptiness
  39. That wakes you from your dreams and makes you lose your sleep
  40. And wakes you up to see you can't escape reality
  41. So let me restate my thesis, I am tristesse
  42. The primal pain and distress
  43. The primordial bane of existence
  44. The mortification of a thousand lifetimes
  45. Incarcerated in a human vessel with no lifeline
  46. I am what all life turns into in time
  47. I am the fin of all things, the nihilistic endgame
  48. The death rattle that rings, the death metal that sings
  49. The deathbed of a king
  50. And I am almost everything
  51. Because without me, you'd have nothin' to feel happy about
  52. I'm the reason that you cry and the reason that you shout
  53. And the reason you survive and the reason you hold out
  54. Because I'm the only way you know when joy's around
  55. And I'm the only way you know when joy is gone
  56. Because joy is temporary and sadness is long
  57. Because joy is necessary for sadness to be strong
  58. Because without me, you'd have nothin' to be joyful for
  59. So you can try to run from me, but you won't get far
  60. Because I exist in your head and your heart
  61. I'm always close at hand and ready to start
  62. The minute your mirth goes dark
  63. I exist in your heart and your head
  64. So it's best if you let me into your bed
  65. To lie with me until the end
  66. When we can finally be at rest
