Lyrical Analysis of...
Pressure Coefficient
- ///verse 1
- the pressure coefficient is the ratio of what your under
- to what your structure was designed to hold and I wonder
- how many emcees have calculated theirs honestly
- versus the number who perform the math dishonestly
- for an audience that doesnt know the difference between
- a real stress test and an aesthetic of stress, ive been
- inside the actual test and inside the performance of the test
- and I will tell you from the inside only one of them arrests
- your development and turns it into something that will hold
- the other one is theater and theater dont survive the cold
- i got a pressure coefficient ive been updating since I started
- since the first time something I built under pressure departed
- the realm of decoration and became structural became
- the actual load bearing thing and I put my name
- on that and only that I dont claim the rehearsal
- I only claim the thing that had to be universal
- in its truth because the pressure it was under left no room
- for the convenient lie, the comfortable costume
- ///hook
- pressure coefficient rising, whats your structure rated for
- what collapses under thirty atmospheres, whats at your core
- when the recreational is gone, when the audience is gone
- when its you and the material and the work from dusk to dawn
- with nobody watching and nobody noting and nobody to claim it for
- the pressure coefficient strips the decoration from the floor
- down to the load bearing truth, what do you have
- when the pressure coefficient is the only math
- ///verse 2
- i watched a lot of promising structures fail
- not for lack of talent, the material had the scale
- but the construction was exterior, beautiful facing stone
- over an interior that was never properly alone
- with the test, never properly pressure tested before
- the public load arrived and the gorgeous before
- became the spectacular collapse after, and I
- felt that as a warning and I took it as the why
- behind the years I spent in the unfashionable deep
- before I let the surface version speak
- you can spend a decade decorating the outside of a thing
- that has no structural integrity and then bring
- it to market beautiful and technically complete
- in every aesthetic dimension and then the concrete
- weight of actual audience, actual reception
- actual sustained engagement thats the section
- where the untested thing reveals its untested ness
- and the pressure coefficient was always the test, confess it
- ///verse 3
- the pressure coefficient is also a tenderness test
- not just structural, the sustained weight of the rest
- of your actual life pressing against the craft
- the grief that arrives mid session, the draft
- you wrote the day the bottom fell out underneath your ground
- and you had to finish it anyway, that sound
- is in the record somewhere, that pressure coefficient
- is the one im most proud of, the most proficient
- proof of what the work can hold, not the triumphant bar
- but the bar written in the dark from wherever you actually are
- the pressure stripped me to the load bearing true
- and what was left when everything else fell through
- is this, twelve tracks of what survives a test
- i didnt volunteer for, the pressure coefficient
- is not a badge, its just the record
- of what held when everything pressured
