  6. of what actually happened versus what got written
  7. upstairs in the light where the narrative was smitten
  8. with itself and pruned and shaped for the audience
  9. the silt is the raw data, the obedient
  10. uninterpreted accumulation of the actual
  11. every century a stratum, nothing is redactable
  12. down here, nothing is revised for the reception
  13. the silt holds the original without exception
  14. i been building a palimps since I could hold a pen
  15. the layers visible to anyone who looks, and then
  16. beneath those layers, earlier drafts, the teenage rough
  17. the pre linguistic record, the before I knew enough
  18. to edit all of it still there in the sediment
  19. all of it still load bearing, still permanent
  20. even the embarrassing early layer, the naive stratum
  21. the cartography of who I was is part of the datum
  22. that produced who I am you cant separate the silt
  23. from the sediment that followed the structure is the built
  24. accumulation, not the final coat of paint
  25. the silt memory is the whole thing, saint
  26. and sinner layered together past the ability to distinguish
  27. one from the other, I am all of it, in the same exquisite
  28. pressure formed, time formed, compound self
  29. guess it doesnt curate it just shelves

  32. silt memory holds the whole record at the sediment rate
  33. of one true layer per lived year, compressed
  34. into the geological self nothing redressed
  35. in retrospect, nothing made more flattering by distance
  36. the silt memory keeps everything at its original insistence
  37. the way it actually was the weight of that is the album
  38. the silt memory is the column

  40. ive been composting the wreckage of a dozen different selves
  41. took the books that broke my backbone, put the lessons on the shelves
  42. the self at twenty two and the self at twenty eight
  43. are different strata with a visible seismic break between the plates
  44. you can date the shift by the change in the material
  45. the before it happened layer, fine and bacterial
  46. the after it happened layer, coarser, rearranged
  47. something in the crystalline structure of the language changed
  48. and I can read that layer now with something close to fondness
  49. the same way a geologist reads a catastrophe with the calmness
  50. of understanding this is what a major event looks like
  51. in the record the kpg boundary, the stratum of the spike
  52. of iridium that tells you something from outside the system
  53. arrived and changed the system, I have several of those, wisdom
  54. being the ability to read your own strata
  55. understand your own catastrophe as data
  56. the silt memory is the archive of the earned
  57. every session where I sat until the language turned
  58. into something I hadnt said before, something that fit
  59. the actual shape of the thing I was trying to transmit
  60. and most of those sessions nobody saw, nobody clocked
  61. nobody gave me the receipts the silt memory logged
  62. every one of them regardless the silt doesnt need an audience
  63. to record the silt is its own obedient
  64. archivist, its own librarian, its own press
  65. the silt memory of the work Ive done under duress
  66. and under peace and under confusion and under the specific
  67. weight of twenty three and under the terrific
  68. clarity of thirty and under everything between
  69. all of it is in the record, all of it is sedimented clean
  70. into the column of who I am when the pressures applied
  71. the silt memory is whats there when everything else has dried
