Lyrical Analysis of...

The Cartographers Confession

  1. ///verse 1
  2. i mapped the unmappable terrain of my own meridians
  3. drew longitude through grief and latitude through discipline
  4. the coordinates of failure intersect at twenty three degrees
  5. due south of where I started, north of where I meant to be
  6. but the cartographer doesn' grieve the wrong turns on the parchment
  7. every deviation is a contour line, a garment
  8. sewn into the topographic body, all the peaks
  9. all the sudden drop off valleys and the weeks
  10. of plateau where nothing rose and nothing fell
  11. just the flat sustained continuation I know that elevation well
  12. the nothing happening stretch that separates the climbs
  13. thats where most people turn around, I mapped those times
  14. not as failure, as topography, the low ground has its data
  15. tells you what the water does, tells you what comes later
  16. when the gradient resumes I mapped all of it, meridian by meridian
  17. the cartographers confession, I got lost and made it discipline
  18. ///hook
  19. i keep the map revised, keep the legend legible
  20. every symbol cross referenced, every border revisable
  21. this is not terra incognita, this is terra that I earned
  22. every elevation line a lesson that I burned
  23. into the parchment with the pressure of the real
  24. the cartographers confession is the map was always feel
  25. as much as measurement, the instrument and the intuition
  26. the cartographers confession, I been making my position
  27. up as I go
  28. but the going makes the map
  29. and the map is how I know
  30. where I am when I look back
  31. ///verse 2
  32. i charted every river by the sound it made at dusk
  33. every canyon by the particular color of its rust
  34. theres a mountain range I named for someone who wont hear the name
  35. but the altitude was real and so was everything the same
  36. about the way it felt to stand at the summit and realize
  37. the summit is just another place that has a different size
  38. of view, not a destination, a vantage, a perspective shift
  39. the mountain doesnt reward you with arrival, its the gift
  40. of temporarily above, of briefly having elevation
  41. the cartographer knows better than to make that his narration
  42. of success, the story isnt getting to the top
  43. the story is the mapping while you walk, while you drop
  44. into the valley on the other side, while you navigate the pass
  45. while you read the lichens on the stone for what they say about the past
  46. climate of this specific slope guess thats the cartographers obsession
  47. not the peak but the particularity, the precision
  48. i drew my childhood like a contested border zone
  49. unclear at the edges, sovereign in the middle and alone
  50. in a way that maps dont have a symbol for
  51. the feeling of a territory that doesnt know what its a territory for
  52. yet I flagged those places with a special notation
  53. a symbol I invented, half question mark, half foundation
  54. stone the places that were simultaneously
  55. unknown and load bearing, simultaneously
  56. the thing I built on and the thing I hadnt solved
  57. some of the map evolved
  58. while I was reading it, the ground moved underneath the pen
  59. and I remapped it and it moved and I remapped again
  60. and the final version of the map is still in progress
  61. and thats not failure thats the only honest cartographic process
  62. ///bridge
  63. dont hand me your GPS of who Im supposed to be
  64. dont triangulate my purpose by your signal tower reading
  65. the map im drawing bleeds past every edge of every page
  66. i need more parchment, need more coastline, need more age
